HIGHLIGHTS:
DAY 1 CAIRNS – CHILLAGOE (LD) After an early morning pick-up from your accommodation, your journey begins over the Kuranda Range towards the Gulf Savannah. An informative guided tour of the restored Tyrconnell gold mine, before arriving at Chillagoe, where we explore one of the impressive Limestone Cave formations. Overnight camp at Chillagoe Eco Lodge & Campground. DAY 2 CHILLAGOE - UNDARA (BLD) This morning finds us exploring the sights in Chillagoe and surroundings, visit the Old Chillagoe Smelters, Balancing Rock, before making our way to our overnight stay at Undara. This afternoon you will be taken on an informative tour of the world's largest, longest and most accessible lava tube system with an experienced Savannah Guide. Overnight camp at Undara Lodge & Campground.
DAY 3 UNDARA - KARUMBA (BLD) Travelling west, we pass the old gold towns of Georgetown and Croydon, where you will discover the history of the town on a guided walking tour with a Savannah Guide. Travelling on through Normanton to arrive at Karumba. This evening finds us wining and dining on the beach as we watch the splendid sunset over the Gulf of Carpentaria. Overnight accommodation at the Karumba Lodge – ensuite facilities.
DAY 4 KARUMBA - LAWN HILL NATIONAL PARK (BLD) An early start provides excellent opportunities to see the wildlife of the Gulf Savannah. Across the “Plains of Promise”, stopping off at Burke and Wills' most northern campsite #119, Leichhardt Falls, and Burketown before arriving at Adel's Grove, on the edge of Lawn Hill National Park, our campsite for the next two nights.
DAY 5 LAWN HILL NATIONAL PARK (BLD) A day to relax in the clear waterways of Lawn Hill Gorge with plenty of opportunity for canoeing (own expense) and bush walking to view the gorge sandstone formations. Lawn Hill is an oasis in this Gulf Wilderness, a haven for bird life. It will leave you captivated by its beauty and tranquillity. Overnight camp at Adel's Grove.
DAY 6 LAWN HILL NP - NORMANTON (BLD) We visit Riversleigh Fossil Fields, which is considered one of the world's richest fossil deposits, dating back some 15 million years. After exploring these treasures, we make our way to Normanton. Overnight camp at Gulfland Motel & Caravan Park.
DAY 7 NORMANTON - COBBOLD GORGE (BLD) This morning we board the Gulflander train at Normanton for a historic journey to Blackbull Siding, before making our way to Cobbold Gorge, our campsite for the next 2 nights.
DAY 8 COBBOLD GORGE (BLD) We start the day with an informative tour of Cobbold Gorge with a Savannah Guide. A boat cruise allows us to experience the uniqueness of this gorge. After lunch at the gorge, we climb the majestic sandstone cliffs for a spectacular view of the gorge from above.
DAY 9 COBBOLD GORGE - MT. SURPRISE (BLD) This morning we visit Forsayth, where you board the Savannahlander train for your journey to Mt. Surprise. This evening enjoy the entertainment around the campfire. Accommodation tonight at Mount Surprise.DAY 10 MT. SURPRISE - CAIRNS (B) This morning you'll re-board the Savannahlander train for another historic train journey, as you make your way back to Cairns. Lunch at own expense. On arrival at Cairns Central train station, you will be taken back to your accommodation.
